Used Unix systems generally sell for a premium as compared to their PC counterparts. They are relatively difficult to find because they have always catered to enterprise use rather than use by consumers. Amazingly enough, even the older machines (such as the
HP 712/100, circa mid-1990's) still perform well under the latest X-Window UNIX environments (such as HP-UX 11.0), making these affordable RISC systems an ideal platform to learn on. By comparison, a PC from the same era and having the same CPU speed (such as the Pentium 100) was quickly rendered obsolete and thus is woefully inadequate today for anything but the most basic of use. Because the Internet by and large has always run on Unix, there will be strong demand for Unix systems for quite some time to come. Knowing Unix means you will have an advantage in the increasingly competitive IT job market.
